Many people struggle with balance in the golf swing, both at setup and then during the swing. To make a good athletic move with the golf swing balance is imperative to accomplish a good golf swing. To help us work on balance both in setup and during the swing we need to go to any sporting goods store or fitness store and purchase two air filled discs in which you can stand on.
Place the discs on the ground the duplicating the width of your stance. Supporting yourself with a club then stand on the air filled discs. Once you find your balance then begin to set yourself in the set up position. Most of us are out of balance in our set up position, either too far out on our toes are too much back into our heels, but don’t know this because we do not know where proper balance is in our set up position. The balance discs will help us find proper balance in set up.
If you are indeed too far out on your toes at set up when you take your set up position your will fall forward off the discs as your try to set up. If you are too far in your heels or in a sitting position as you set up you will tend to fall backwards off of the discs. For most of us we do not know what proper balance is in our set up position because we don’t know where our center of balance should be in our setup. By using the discs we will find where our proper set up should be in respect to balance.
Once you have comfortable with balance in our setup position, then begins to make a few swings in slow motion with the club. This will help us feel proper balance throughout the swing. Another use of the discs as we begin to make swings is to feel in the backswing weight transferring to the right leg and right side during the backswing. This will indicate that we are properly shifting weight onto our right leg during the backswing. IF you begin to feel weight shift to the outside of our right foot too much we will begin to lose balance and fall of the disc to the right. This would indicate a sway motion or too much lateral motion to the right.
