A Must Training Aid For Everyone
By Michael Fromuth, PGA Certified Instructor St Louis, MO
If there is one training aid that every golfer should have in their golf bag this would be alignment sticks. One of the biggest problems golfers face is making sure that they are aligned correctly at the target. Many golfers do not correctly align themselves at their intended target which can cause the golfer to think they are hitting shots off-line when they are really not. This leads them to then make a compensating move in their swing to correct what they think is a shot off-line. Thus the golfer has now taken one swing flaw and compounded the problem with another swing flaw. For example – if a golfer is lined up right of their intended target and sees the ball go right of what they believe is their target they then will make a change in their swing to try to get the ball to go where they think it should go. In this case many times they then come over the top, pulling the ball back to the left or toward their intended target. So now they have taken one problem – not lining up correctly – and compounded this problem with a second swing flaw – an over the top move to pull the shot back on line toward their target.
With alignment sticks this problem of correct alignment and quickly be rectified. Place one stick just outside of the ball and pointed toward the intended target. Then place the second alignment stick parallel to the first stick about where your feet will be. This will help ensure that you are lining up correctly on each shot. Now if we see shots going off-line, either right or left of the target we know that we are doing something mechanically wrong in the swing. Then we can begin to work on the swing to help correct what is causing the ball to go off-line. We simply have removed one variable – correct alignment – from the equation of how to hit the ball correctly and at our intended target.
If you go to any Pro tournament, whether it be LPGA, PGA or Senior PGA event and watch players warm up on the range you will see almost every Professional golfer using alignment sticks. So even the best golfers in the world understand the importance of correct alignment and utilize alignment sticks on a daily basis to help them with their golf game. If it is good enough for the Professionals, I think it should be good enough for YOU.
